Why not
  +			int ret;
  +			ret = write_disk_sb(rdev);
  +			if (ret) {
  +				md_error(mddev, rdev);
  +				err += ret;
  +			}

instead (and remove frdev entirely)?

I mean, in theory, multiple disks may fail...
But wait.. will md_error() call this routine again?
