I get the same result installing from http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/Research/SRG/netos/xen/downloads/xen-2.0.5-src.tgz. At that point I assumed I messed up install procedure somewhere, and simply copied the file /etc/xen/scripts/vif-bridge from another box with older xen version. I think the line "ifconfig ${vif} $OP" is missing.
