Hello All,

I tried your latest acpi sources, using 2.4.20+patch and 2.5.50. But it does
not work.
This is the acpi messages i have in dmesg:

I've the same Prob with my IBM A31.

Hello All,

It seems my problem come from a bad bios from IBM..
And because acpi work under windows, they doesn't release a new version
correcting my problem (Could not found ECDT).
So if i understand it is a fault from IBM, no?
perharps it is a stupid question, but for curiosity, what is the difference
between the windows acpi implementation and yours?
which i could perhaps respond myself that we don't know how microsoft have
done it because it is closed source... but i wish someone know something more
on this.

If we cannot do somethink without a new bios from IBM, i think that i will
contact them for asking them to do something.. i bought a computer, the
minimum is to have it working with the standards.. the more we will ask for
this new bios, the more chance we have getting one ;).
But i do not know what to say about the technical side.. could someone help me
in saying what is the real problem?

Thanks in advance, :)

                                Tom

I asked this a while ago, but I didn't get a fix, and the problem still
exists...

I'm on an IBM Thinkpad a30p laptop, using a 2.5.66 kernel, and I can't
use ACPI. On bootup, ACPI tables are found, but there is a problem in
the ECDT, and ACPI disables itself. Exerpt from my dmesg is attached.

This problem is not in 2.4 (because the ECDT isn't used?), but it is in
kernels as early as 2.5.50. I haven't checked earlier kernels, but I can
if someone honestly thinks that would help.

I've gotten several emails from other people with similar systems, all
IBM laptops, regarding my earlier posts on this problem, asking if I
found a solution. This leads me to believe that it is an incompatability
with the ACPI implementation on IBM laptops. I, personally, am willing
to accept partial functionality because of a broken BIOS, but right now
I get no ACPI support at all, which is really disappointing.

ACPI section of .config is attached.

I can provide any other details that may be needed, and I will gladly
test bogus patches and dangerous fixes ;-) -- IBM gave me an awesome
warranty on this laptop, and I don't mind losing it for a few days if
they need to replace it.

Thanks in advance.

On our servers only 1 out of 4 cpus is initialized.

We are using IBM x445 4ry with 4 XEON cpus

The kernel is somewhat outdated. At the moment we are bound to this version.
A boot with Knoppix and kernel 2.4.23 did not succeed either.

Do I need to do what is described here:
http://developer.intel.com/technology/iapc/acpi/bios_override.htm

Hi,
Len Brown gave me your address because I talked to him
about a problem I'm having while trying installing linux (I tried
several distros)
The problem is that my notebook (a sony pcg-nvr23)
shuts down after a random number of seconds during the installation process.
I think it's an acpi problem because once I tried booting Knoppix by keeping
the temperature around
my notebook really low (it was a really cold winter night)
Looking at /proc/acpi/temperature I realized that the cpu temperature was
getting higher and higher as the second passed, untill my computer turned
off.
Another weird thing is this. I installed Suse 9.1 always being in a cold
place and it seems that the temperature is quite stable (it's not so low but
at least it's far from upper limit). I would like to know if it's possible,
a way to install any linux distribution without keeping the notebook cool.
I tried to pass these options at boot time
acpi=off
acpi=off doapm
acpi=on
but none of these trys was successful.
Do you have any suggestion?
I hope so. Thanks anyway
Giacomo

This is probably because of powersave daemon controlling your cpufreq.
This package was only available for SUSE and ALT Linux.
Currently people are working on a Debian and Gentoo package. Not sure if there
are already finished packages (please let me know if you find them).

You could use the cpufreqd (now called cpuspeed?) package that only scales
cpufreq or you can try to adopt the powersaved (that also includes a lot
additional features) to Knoppix (CVS hosted on forge.novell.com), be sure you
get help on the mailing list there.

Still, if you are running on full power for a long time you will probably always
suffer of a critical thermal shutdown.
This could be related to http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3410.
Hopefully this patch goes mainline soon.
If you have a high tsp value (check cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/trip_points)
for your passive mode it's probably bug #3410.
As a workaround you could lower the passive trip point value there by:
echo C:H:P:A1:A2 >/proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/trip_points
C -> critical limit
H -> hot limit
P -> passive limit
A1/2 -> active limit
Just pass any value if a limit is not defined in your BIOS, e.g. echo
100:90:60:50:45 sets passive cooling trip point limit (cpufreq will be lowered)
to 60 degree.

Ohh, at installation process.
The machine probably needs processor, thermal and fan module to be loaded to
control your fans which will be loaded after the right package is installed ->
too late.

I wonder why you could install SL 9.1 as we started to load these modules very
early with 9.3/10.0.

Maybe it's even a more general ACPI regression that prevents your fan controlled
  properly? Is there time enough to catch dmesg output?

I forogt: Clean your fan slots first.

I had a similar problem, except it would only overheat when compiling the
kernel, (which takes a long time, and it would just overheat about 3/4 the way
through).

I use cpufreq, and set the max to 90%. No more problems...

summary of the problem:
with kernel 2.6.25 my acpi does not work whereas with version <= 2.6.24 all works fine.

Full description:
when i run acpi -a this is my output:
No support for device type: battery
No support for device type: ac_adapter

"lsmod | grep acpi" says that the acpi module is not loaded so i've tried
"modprobe acpi" but the output is:
FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq
(/lib/modules/2.6.25-2-amd64/kernel/arch/x86/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko):
Device or resource busy

I've also tried to pass acpi=on option when kernel boots

Didn't work out so well, did it?

Please enter this in a report against acpi at bugzilla.kernel.org, thanks.

Don't forget to check the "regression" box :(

what do CONFIG_ACPI_BATTERY and CONFIG_ACPI_AC say in your 2.6.24 and
2.6.25 .config files?

there is no such thing as the "acpi module", so this is normal

that's normal, since you've got powernow_k8 loaded

> > I've also tried to pass acpi=on option when kernel boots

there is no such option as "acpi=on", so this is also normal.

"dmesg -s64000 |grep -i acpi" will tell you more about what you
just booted, but since you're running the fan and thermal modules,
it is surely on already.
