michael@biggs:~$ cmp -b /tmp/1GB.tst /home/michael/1GB.tst

That seems to stop after the first difference, so I did: -
michael@biggs:~$ cmp -bl /tmp/1GB.tst /home/michael/1GB.tst | wc -l
243
