Hi,
On Friday 3rd Feb 2006 my house received a power surge. It destroyed a
number of electrical items in my house.
One was the Central Heating system, and others included all my PCs. Why
don't surge protectors work?
After paying for the fixing of the Central Heating, I will not have
enough money free to purchase new PCs.
So, in effect, I now do not have any Linux PCs at my disposal, so I
cannot work on ALSA any more. I am sending this email from a work
laptop. I expect it will be about 3-6 months before I can purchase a
replacement Linux PC.
So, this is just a heads up to tell you that any bug fixes or new
features that I might have been doing to ALSA will be considerably delayed.
Kind Regards
James

Yikes! I'm sorry for the loss. It's happened to me before, spiked out
modems and ethernet cards mostly.
What type of surge protector did you use? Was it a shunt type
protector, MOV or series type? Any UPS involved? Is there any chance
you could do a small-claims court charge on your electrical utility?
Even if you can't, it's worth raising the issue with them.

James,
That must have been one hell of a surge, to knock out your central
heating systems. I lost a bunch of gear to a leaky roof not long ago
including a circa 1983 IBM PC/AT in mint condition.
Anyway, this really sucks. Do you accept PayPal donations? There are
many, many, users out there whose hardware would be useless if not for
your work - if even 10% put up a few bucks then you could probably
replace all your gear.
Did you lose any data or hardware donated by vendors?

I agree with what has been said.
Please ensure that it is not the obligation of the protector
manufacturer to compensate for your losses!
Otherwise, set up a donation account. I use CA0106, and I need it.
Greetings,
Tilman Kranz.

Oh that's too bad. I hope you'll have a good chance to receive a new
one soon.
BTW, I've been also quite busy for other things, and will almost no
time for ALSA development for the next weeks...
