I'd like to add a "me too".
I've been watching the work of Hans and co. with great interest for several
years. The performance and design of Reiser4 is very impressive. But for
me, improved performance is not enough compensation for the pain of
switching to a "non-standard" filesystem.
Compression and encryption, on the other hand, are a killer feature. No
matter how many hard drives I buy, I never have have enough space, and there
are no existing encryption solutions for Linux that are well integrated into
the OS. Even Windows XP has better filesystem security, as much as it pains
me to say.
When the cryptocompress feature is ready, I will no doubt be taking a long
weekend off and converting all of my Linux machines to reiser4.

I would like to add me too, but please believe me I don't want to be unpolite.
I think reiser4 is imho the best Filesystem available, with its
extensibility und its superior performance. Thanks a lot for doing
this, good fses need the world ;)
I thought about switching last October but the the kernel-integration
work started, bugs appeard and performance went down.
What I've heard from performance is still lower than last October,
compression pluggin should appear "soon", now a half year later its
still not available and resizer and repacker are far away :-/
I think I have to wait another year...
However thanks many many times, reiser4 is great and I hope community
and industry will find its value.
Best wishes, lg Clemens

Any of the Reiser devs have an answer to my questions? :-)

Stability is reasonable, but we are sending in a batch of stuff soon
(maybe this week) that will improve CPU performance and maybe tomorrow
vs will tell us if there are stability improvements in there also, I
forget. We fixed some cases where if you use up all memory it would
hang, that I remember.

This depends on how long we remain distracted by Hellwig and company more than by how long they take to complete.
As soon as we go into the kernel, zam and vs focus on the compression plugin stabilization followed by working on the repacker. Neither of those tasks will take anywhere near as long as dealing with Hellwig's code changes (none of which benefit reiser4 much). Edward is working on the compression plugin, but it is a task that could much benefit from the senior guys helping him out with code audits and the like.

The users are more reliable sources than I am. They have more computers running Reiser4 than I do.
It was stable, the VFS changes destabilized it, it is back to being stable again, the next release that I hope goes out this week will help that some more by a smidgen.
There is however one thing that could reduce stability in that patch, which is that we have changed the write code to greatly reduce CPU usage by not doing things 4k at a time.

Are there any estimates of when the repacker and compression plugins
will be available / stable?
