Hi,
I've almost got my mvme5500 running. I get the following error when booting up.
kernel BUG in add_preempt_count at kernel/sched.c:2819!
Oops: kernel access of bad area, sig: 11 [#1]
I'm a little new at this and don't know whether I'm looking at a xenomai problem, an adeos problem, or something else.
Any help and direction would be appreciated.
Jim

If unsure where the problem comes from, try to boot a clean kernel
(unpatched) first, then a patched one but with disabled ipipe, and then
one with disabled xenomai. If the bug seems to be ipipe/xeno-related,
please report the patch and the xenomai versions, and also any potential
board-specific patches.

I get the exact same error using a 2.6.14.6 kernel and gcc 3.3.3 on
the mvme5500. Sometimes the processor just hangs instead of producing
the error. The problem is with ipipe since this happens without even
applying the xenomai patches. Any ideas about how to figure out
what's wrong???
Thanks,
Gary

Sorry for the missing history.
I started with a vanilla 2.6.14-7 kernel from kernel.org, I patched it
with a Motorola patch to enable the features specific to the mvme5500.
I built under ELDK 4.0 and the kernel ran just fine.
Next I retrieved xenomai-2.1.1 and followed the install instructions.
The adeos version adeos-ipipe-2.6.14-1.2.03.patch. This patch applied
and I rebuilt the kernel. I ran into a problem with xmon not compiling
so I removed that switch from the kernel hacking menu and it built fine.
That brings us to now.
In reference to your recommendation, can I simply disable ipipe and
leave xenomai enabled and expect the kernel to run? I thought there was
a pretty close coupling between the two.
Thanks for the help.

No, you are right, this is not possible. I meant booting with both ipipe
and xenomai disabled.
Is your board able to boot without the Motorola patches? If yes, does
the problem persist? BTW, did the ipipe patch apply cleanly on top of
the Motorola patch or did you have to fix some hunks?
@all: What will help to track this down are back-traces of the crash.
Does the console contain a stack trace as well? If not, try using the
ipipe-tracer (additional patch [1]) and put an
ipipe_trace_panic_freeze() + ipipe_trace_panic_dump() before that BUG()
(with the same condition, of course). Actually, this tool can report
more than a stack trace. It records a full function call history and may
reveal where the ipipe patch left the correct path.
Jan
PS: Just in case you thought about this, switching the ipipe patch to
1.3 may only hide the problem. The newer patches contain optimisations,
not bug fixes of the 1.2 series.

My story is the same as Jim's except I used 2.6.16.6 and a gcc 3.3.3
cross compiler. The ipipe patch applies just fine after the motorola
patch. Building with ipipe disabled results in a kernel that boots
and runs just fine. When ipipe is enabled, I sometimes get the error
Jim received, sometimes the kernel just hangs. There is never a stack
trace on the console. I've tried ipipe versions 1.2-01, 1.2-03,
1.3-00, 1.3-02, and 1.3-03, all with the same results (either the
kernel hangs or I get the kernel BUG error).
I haven't been able to get the board to boot without using the
motorola patch.
I have tried building with ipipe-tracer, but this results in compile
errors (the tracer patch applies just fine). Here are the compile
errors when ipipe-tracer is enabled:

This bug is triggered by CONFIG_DEBUG_PREEMPT. The pipeline must be
indirectly using the preemption locks over an invalid context somewhere
on ppc. I'll try to build a similar setup on my lite5200 in the next
days. More later. Thanks for reporting this.

I can't reproduce it on 2.6.14.7 compiled for an icecube target, which
means that this issue is likely triggered by some code which is
specifically enabled by the MVME5500 configuration, and/or added by the
Motorola patch (could not find a public access to it, btw). I suspect an
issue in the network support this board uses given the boot sequence
before the oops, but I'm just taking a wild guess.
As Jan suggested, we need to get a usable backtrace for this bug. Try
applying this patch, along with the ipipe tracer patch.

Philippe, can you comment on this? I do not have an PPC build
environment at hand.
@Gary: Do you get the same error without the Motorola patch?

I can't reproduce it here, but that does not mean much, since I can't
select the same setup anyway, due to the missing patch. Is the file
arch/ppc/ipipe-mcount.S listed as being compiled during the kernel build?

When I patch a generic 2.6.16.6 kernel with
adeos-ipipe-2.6.14-ppc-1.3-03 and ipipe-tracer-2.6.14-ppc-1.3-03 and
then enable the ipipe tracer I receive the undefined _mcount errors
from the kernel build. This happens even without the motorola patch.
During the kernel build arch/ppc/kernel/ipipe-mcount.S is compiled
to arch/ppc/kernel/ipipe-mcount.o, but for some reason ld still
complains that _mcount is undefined.

Having your .config file would help.

I've attached first the config file used without the motorola
patches, and then the config file used with a motorola patched
kernel.

Ok, don't bother. You did not build a uImage like I did. I do have this
issue with the default Makefile target too.

Thanks for the Makefile patch. The kernel successfully compiles
with the tracer enabled after applying this. Unfortunately I am now
getting a different error at boot time.
The image file downloads and starts executing but fails with:
Uncompressing Linux...inflate returned FFFFFFFB
exit

Try lowering CONFIG_IPIPE_TRACE_SHIFT to 12.
