Hi,

so far reiser4-for-2.6.16-[3|4].patch.gz runs great here, but I've 
recongised that when building a java-project with netbeans I got this 
output in the netbeans message-window:

instead of what I was used to see before with 
reiser4-for-2.6.16-2.patch.gz:

To run this application from the command line without Ant, try:

This seems very weird to me. I can't imagine that this could be issued 
by the filesystem so I just build "clean" kernels with the "working and 
non-working" patch. But problem still persist.

I have compiled kernel 2.6.16.18 with this patch. Then mounted reiser4
filesystem for spool of mail server, listening from smtp-source and
delivering to smtp-sink. This is the load, caused problems with previous
versions of reiser4 (see
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=reiserfs&m=114175170229924&w=2 )
This patch works without problem.

How does reiser4 compare to ext3 now (if you measured it)?

Well, while writing messages to spool ext3 gives 240 msg/sec, while
reiser4 only 115 msg/sec. It was measured while acquiring 136000
messages, occupying more than 3 Gig storage. But while delivering these
messages from spool, reiser4 gives 155 msg/sec, while ext3 only 115
msg/sec rates.
Both filesystems were mounted with "noatime,nodiratime" options, at
FAST-80 WIDE SCSI 160.0 MB/s bus.

Applied it to 2.6.16.18. It behaved very well comparing to 2.6.15.6 w/
second .15 patch.
It's a pretty busy web server, I usually open `tail -fs.1 access.log`
in one ssh window, and `vmstat 1` in another. 2.6.16.18 still shows
small pauses during write-outs, though they are much shorter - 1-2
seconds, comparing to up to 10 seconds on 2.6.15.6, and it writes out
in ~20Mb/second chunks (and ~5Mb/second on 2.6.15.6).
So the performance part is great. But it crashes after few hours of
work. Logs are empty (tried it couple of times, first time it crashed
20 minutes after booting system, second time it survived for about 5
hours). No error messages in logs (logs are on r4 partition too, I'll
try to place logs on ext2 partition if I'm unable to reproduce this
crash on my home PC).

Various versions of reiser4 in the past have had this problem, always 
triggered by kio_http (a component of the konqueror web browser). At a 
certain point the bug disappeared, but now it is back.

After the bug happened it was impossible to sync or write anything to the 
disk. Rebooted and fscked, no corruptions found.

I reported a few weeks ago seems to be gone. Are you aware of that? what
caused it on the first place?

01:53:17 up 1 day, 23:59, 11 users,  load average: 0.37, 0.14, 0.21

This allows me to use a kernel newer than 2.6.12.6 for the first time.
Now, let's hope it stays ok and the bug doesn't show itself in just a
few hours.

03:57:54 up 7 days,  2:03, 11 users,  load average: 1.66, 1.64, 1.91

Ok, it's been a week already. While something has improved, the problem
seems to still be there; it triggers much less often, and behaves
different.

For now, I've only managed to trigger it using mutt, the moment I "send"
mail, it happens like 90% of the times. I can now, tho, edit files with vim
without turning crazy.

My brother, who uses the computer (I only ssh to it) hasn't noticed any
problem, therefore if the problem isn't fixed, it is well hidden. Also,
when I trigger it, it doesn't seem to affect whatever I/O is being done
in paralel of the task that caused it, which makes me think it triggers
far more often than I notice.

Haven't tried -4, should I? I think I've heard it only fixes build-as-module
problems, but I really don't know.
