Does such check in notify_change() looks better for you?

notify_change():
        if (IS_IMMUTABLE(inode))
                return -EPERM;
        if (IS_APPEND(inode) &&
                        (ia_valid & ~(ATTR_CTIME | ATTR_MTIME | ATTR_ATIME)))
                return -EPERM;
