Subject: eth0 in dmesg became eth1 from kernel
Date: Fri, 06 Oct 2006 06:13:04 +0000	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <4525F3F0.6000209@magellan-technology.com> (raw)

Hello,

I'm working on a Linux live filesystem CD and I've come across a very strange
problem. My system is based on a Debian system with a custom 2.6.17 kernel.

dmesg reported the SKY2 network adapter as eth0, but it became eth1 in
/sys/class/net. /sys/class/net doesn't show any eth0 whatsoever.

The laptop I was using also had a firewire adapter, but I'm not loading any
firewire modules at all. If I boot a Knoppix CD on this system, the ethernet
becomes eth0 and the firewire becomes eth1.

On my live filesystem, if I run udevmonitor followed by udevtrigger, I see that
the kernel is sending a UEVENT for eth1 only - even though dmesg say that the
only network device is eth0.

Why is this happening? Is there anything I can do about this in udev?

I can probably handle this with iftab and ifrename, but I'd like to know if
there is a udev way.

regards,

Aras Vaichas
