Most useful/easy flavour of Linux for Ham Radio Applications

Hello all,

It's been a long time since I checked in to this group.

Have been unable to play with Linux for some time.
As a result I'm way behind.

Please - opinions on which is the best flavour of Linux for
ham radio applications. Ease of configuration(good documentation)
is my major concern.

The documentation is rather weak whatever you take..
(Or rather, there are lots of tiny bits of it scattered all around..)

"Vendors" that supply AX.25 in binary delivered kernel are
in my quick survey:
  - Debian (4.0)
  - SuSE (9.x, probably same with 10.x)

Vendors that don't supply:
  - Redhat / Fedora

If you don't need AX.25, that is meaningless difference.
(It is meaningfull when you want to make RF-to-net APRS igate.)

For gmfsk et.al. HF data mode programs about any Linux with
support for your audio hardware is a good choice.

Again Debian is likely your best choice for a system that has
them all available pre-compiled.

There are tons and tons of other Linux distributions, like
various flavours of Ubuntu, which is Debian derivative.
But do they have HAM-suites ? That I don't know.

I use Slackware and compile my own packages with checkinstall. 
Everything  seems to work great! The list is as follows: GMFsk, Kpsk, 
TWpsk, HF rtty, Qgrid, Gsat, Xlog, Grig, predict, Qsstv, TWclock, 
Xastir, Xcall. Slackware is one of oldest around with plenty of 
documentation.  Hamshack live cd is a good way to try it. Go to 
http://hamshack-hack.sourceforge.net/.

Ubuntu includes kernels with AX.25, mkiss, etc. as modules, as well  
as a large number of ham radio packages (probably the same ones as  
Debian itself).

But... You can still do an APRS igate without having AX.25 in the
kernel.  Xastir can do it via a Serial TNC or a Serial KISS TNC
interface.

Where the AX.25 interface comes in really handy is when you want to
connect multiple pieces of software to the same TNC, or of course
when you want to do TCP/IP networking or some other networking
protocol over RF.

Yeah, I do something similar with archlinux. (Which is sort of a cousin to
slackware.)

See http://www.linux-ax25.org/wiki/Distributions for some descriptions
of the various distributions.

Personally, I use SUSE because of the superior installation, packaging
and management tools.  I have had a lot of issues with Ubuntu and
Debian.  Forget about Fedora unless you want to build your own kernel
and packages.

You should check out QST for some other distros
