Subject: Summer of Code, wanting to be prepared

I'm a freshman at the University of Minnesota - Morris, studying
computer science. I'm interested in being a Summer of Code student,
either for the Angstrom project, or for Openembedded in general. I
understand Angstrom has never had SoC students, and it's always just
been through OE.
I want to make sure I have the necessary skills before the summer roles
around so that I would be capable of doing the SoC project. I've used OE
in the past(for angstrom), and I have some minimal programming skills.
What sorts of things should I be preparing for, and how should I go
about doing so in OE?
