even though:

$ zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_USB_DEBUG
CONFIG_USB_DEBUG=y


maybe it did not recompile the cdc-acm module after I changed the
CONFIG_USB_DEBUG setting in .config? I'll do a clean recompile..
