Hi all,

I have a problem with running apps that are linked with the xenomai
userspace libraries. At the startup of the apps, when loading these
libraries the result is a segmentation fault.

I am using Xenomai version 2.4.8, but also tried the previous 2.4.7.
The ARM platform is basically the same as the at91sam9263ek board. The
Linux distribution is build with the OpenEmbedded (x11-image,
Angstrom) cross-compile environment, 2.6.28 kernel.

Note: I have been able to run a kernel RTDM driver with success.

While debugging I have been able to trace untill the
XENOMAI_DO_SYSCALL() in ./src/include/asm/xenomai

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, Henri

Do the Xenomai applications run?
Are you using gcc 4.3, if yes, switch to gcc 4.2, gcc 4.3 has a bug that
we can not workaround.
Have you built the kernel and xenomai user-space with compatible
settings with regard to EABI?

The Xenomai applications (cyclictest, latency) result in a hangup of the system.

I did a complete rebuild of the openembedded Angstrom console-image
distribution, compiled this time with the CodeSourcery 2007q3
cross-compile environment. This is a gcc 4.2.1 version. But has the
same hangup behaviour as the default 4.3.3 version.

I build the xenomai userspace with:
./configure --build=i686-pc-linux-gnu
--host=arm-angstrom-linux-gnueabi --enable-arm-mach=at91sam926x
--enable-arm-eabi

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, Henri

CodeSourcery 2007q3 is the version I am using, there is no hang-up
provided that I run cyclictest or latency with a 1000us period instead
of the default 100us.

Also, could you show us the result of cat /proc/interrupts and cat
/proc/xenomai/irq on your target?

I can not tell you if --enable-arm-eabi is correct, it depends on how
you configured the kernel.

Hi Gilles,

Sorry I forgot to mention that I use the following kernel config,
which would match compiling xenomai userspace with --enable-arm-eabi:

CONFIG_AEABI=y
# CONFIG_OABI_COMPAT is not set

Please find the information you asked for below.

root@domain.hid:~# cat /proc/interrupts
           CPU0
  1: 1733 AIC rtc0, ttyS0
 11: 11 AIC mmc0
 14: 6 AIC atmel_spi.0
 19: 345827 AIC at91_tick
 21: 23 AIC eth0
 24: 164 AIC at91_udc
 26: 0 AIC atmel_lcdfb
 29: 0 AIC ohci_hcd:usb1
 31: 0 AIC ads7846
 57: 1 GPIO at91_udc
178: 0 GPIO mmc0
Err: 0

root@domain.hid:~# cat /proc/xenomai/irq
IRQ CPU0
 19: 373801 [timer]
194: 0 [virtual]

I was also able to load an RTDM kernel module and receive irq's from
it in kernel space. This module was not loaded at the time of the
cat's.

The userspace apps are the problem. Probably already at the init of
the xenomai libraries that are linked with them, while
/usr/xenomai/bin/cyclictest -? already makes the system hang.

Thanks,
Henri.

Ok. Could you post your full .config ?

There seems to be something wrong with unlocked context switches. Are
you using the I-pipe patch which ships with the version of Xenomai you
are using? Or did you download some more recent patches on the Adeos site?

I am using the xenomai-2.4.7 release and also the provided patch for
the 2.6.28 kernel:
xenomai-2.4.7/ksrc/arch/arm/patches/adeos-ipipe-2.6.28-arm-1.12-00.patch

Thanks,
Henri

Ok, so the issue with unmasked context switches is a red herring.
I see you have VFP enabled, does your processor really have a VFP unit?
Could you try disabling CONFIG_VFP?

Also note that to you must take care of the FPU instructions you use. If
you have VFP and want to use it (and have it enabled in kernel), you
should pass:
CFLAGS="-mfpu=vfp -mfloat-abi=softfp"
LDFLAGS="-mfpu=vfp -mfloat-abi=softfp"
on Xenomai's configure command line
if you want to compile for soft-floats, you should pass
CFLAGS="-msoft-float"
LDFLAGS="-msoft-float"

If you do not pass anything, the compiler will use instructions which
needs enabling the (slow) FPU emulation in kernel-space. So, I would
advise to start with -msoft-float first, disabling CONFIG_VFP in kernel
configuration, then if it works, try enabling CONFIG_VFP and recompile
user-space with proper options.

I am sorry for this, I took care of passing the proper compiler flags
for FP in head, but not in the v2.4 branch.

Hi Gilles,

I disabled the CONFIG_VFP and build userspace with -msoft-float. The
xenomai test apps now work!!
I will also try to enable the VFP again because the ARM926EJ-S should
have a VFP and then use the other flags.

Anyhow, thank you very much for you excellent support!

Henri.

Ok. Please tell us if it works so that I can modify the makefile to
enable vfp with at91sam926x on head...

Unfortunately enabling the CONFIG_VFP in the kernel config and
building the xenomai with CFLAGS="-mfpu=vfp -mfloat-abi=softfp"
LDFLAGS="-mfpu=vfp -mfloat-abi=softfp" had no success and results in a
system hang-up again. The only thing that works for me is disabling
the CONFIG_VFP in the kernel with -msoft-float for the xenomai user
build.

Thanks,
Henri.

Ok. Do you generate a libc? In that case it should be built with support
for VFP? Or do you copy the one from the toolchain?

I am afraid Xenomai VFP support was written with armv6 and may not work
for the 926EJ-S which is an armv5. I will try and have a look.

Ok, I have checked the code, Xenomai uses the same macros as Linux,
which handle the various versions (armv5, armv6, VFPv3), so, it should
work. Could you send me (privately) the disassembly of pod.o, you should
find it somewhere in the sub-directories of the compiled linux kernel.
Alternatively, send me pod.o itself.
