That's not true. If you go to http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/ath9k#supported_chipsets you can see that ath9k supports also some 5k chipsets. Second you can check http://www.linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers and note that both ath5k ath9k support master or AP mode. I don't know which ones you are using. I compiled and installed compat-wireless and I'm currently using ath9k and I have had no problem. I'm guessing that you probably tried to change operation modes using iwconfig. If you did so it does not work. To run ath9k in ap mode I use hostapd and specify driver=nl80211 in the hostapd.conf. Try using hostapd. If you are still having problems please post a mail with more comments. I've always found good help here on the mailing list. The developers of ath9k have been doing an amazing job and the reply that you received from Neil doesn't reflect the behaviour of this mailing list.
