The crash problem you're experiencing seems quite similar to what I am experiencing when using ath9k with my DWA-552.
As of now, I am completely unable to use my DWA-552 because when it does not crash immediately on loading ath9k or
doing the first "iwconfig wlan0 up", it never initializes properly. I already have a thread open (titled "trouble with
DWA-552 and ath9k") on that topic. No update since I was able to send a trace on January 13.

I keep hoping this problem will be corrected soon.
