Hm.  I don't have so much diskspace (my largest is 750Gb, whole disk),
but I created 1.5Tb sparse lvm volume.  It appears to work for me,
even 32bit version of qemu-kvm-0.12.4 (with the mentioned patch applied).

are you running 32bit userspace and 64bit kernel
by a chance?  If yes that's a kernel prob, see

(the fix will be in 2.6.35 hopefully, now it's in
Andrew Morton's tree).

If not, well, I don't know ;)
