  After banging my head against this issue for some time, I had the 
fortune of catching a post on the OpenWrt forum about how the psk-mixed 
mode was causing a similar issue for somebody else:

"the wlan connection are still there but no more datatransfer can be made"

After switching back to official firmware (WNDR3700), I've not seen the 
problem again. Fingers crossed.
