Maybe the hand-over of nouveaufb does not go well depending on the previous fb driver used (if any), see here: http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/KernelModeSetting.
To check I suggest you launch your system with the "VGA=normal" parameter on the command line.
If that works, just change the fb driver used; if not... Then my guess was bad, sorry.
