That makes sense.  I tried using a ttf: 
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family/Ubuntu-R.tff and get a 
bunch of unknown gsub feature errors for sups, tnum, ss01, sinf, salt, 
pnum, ordn, numr, frac, locl, dnom, case, and calt fetures.
