You need to use the theme for GRUB2. They are available at http://www2.apebox.org/wordpress/linux/228/ and http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/grub-extras/. Older version themes won't work. Also note that versions other than current bzr will silently discard the theme if any error occurs. In bzr it will give you the error and wait for 10 seconds.
