If it crashes or freezes during some operation the userspace is
not related here at all.
There is no known problem with kernel and encrypted swap in RHEL5.6.

You need at least process state when this happens - setup some
console and run alt-sysrq + t and post it somewhere.

For userspace - yes, cryptsetup 1.0.3 in RHEL 5.5 is old and buggy,
and there will update in 5.7.

The worst issue I know about is the cryptsetup 1.0.3 crashes with large
keys (>256bit) (because of lacking support in kernel for XTS mode,
it is not big issue)
