      I finally have had enough time to get around to trying this.  The
2.6.39+ kernel from that git branch/repository gets past the
"xen/balloon: Initialising balloon driver" part, but freezes at "Trying
to unpack root image as initramfs...".

      If I boot this kernel without Xen, it boots fine.

      Since it's not printing a crash/oops message for this failure, I
don't know if that's a different problem or it is somehow related, but
either way, the outcome is still a machine that doesn't boot into a
current Linux kernel while Xen is under the hood.
