I opted to simply repeat the SRCREV from the main kern-tools repository in the meta-kernel-dev bbappend. This gave me a chance to add a bit of warning around changing the SRCREV when working on a non-master branch. It should be present in an new edison branch of the extras repo. So anyone seeing this problem, can do a pull and take it for a spin. Let me know if this doesn't work for some reason.
