Subject: AltGR using VNC/Windows7 to VM running QEMU-KVM on OpenSuse 12.1
Date: Wed, 06 Jun 2012 11:59:27 +0200	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <4FCF29FF.8000501@ip-solutions.se> (raw)

Hi folks,

(I apologize in advance if this has been misdirected, but I am grasping at straws,
and I _*have_* googled for two days so....)

I have now spend two days trying to get AltGr to work from my Vnc client on Windows,
but to no avail.

I have found lots and lots of google hits on the same problem, but they are all
mostly years old, so I cant believe that the issue should still be around, but at
least for me _it is_.

The reason I am addressing this list is that it has become my last resort.

The setup is as follows:

- Vm server running qemu-kvm is OpenSuse 12.1 (LXDE)
- The VMs are mainly latest Lubuntu, but also a few OpenBSD.
- Started with stock 0.15.1-1.7-1.i586 from Opensuses default repositories,
but have now tested 1.1rc3 with the same result.

So the problem is that AltGr doesnt work over the VNC connection to my VMs, but ONLY
when I am accessing the VNC server that KVM is providing, AND(&&) when I am
connecting from Windows.

I have tried changing the keymaps/layouts/codes using setxkbmap, in lxde-configs,
everywhere i can think of.

I have tried tightvnc, realvnc, ultravnc, with the same results.

Running virt-viewer, or vncviewer locally on vm-server, works FINE.

I have tried starting the VMs with or without "-k se", "-k fi", with no differing
results.

Tunneling the x-session(running "vncviewer localhost" on the vm-server) to my windows
machines Xming server, also works fine.

I was naturally suspecting that this was a Windows problem until I tried starting
x11vnc directly inside the running VM.

Connecting from Windows then works without _*any problems at all_*!!

The problem is that this solution doesn't work in the environment I will be running
these VMs, since they wont have ip-addresses all the time.

So. What have I done wrong? What am I missing?

Any help what-so-ever, will be much appreciated!
Regards
Taisto Qvist
