By default git only warns about trailing whitespace when you're applying 
a patch. If you do:

   $ cp .git/hooks/pre-commit.sample .git/hooks/pre-commit

Then it'll warn on commit, too:

   $ git commit -a
   gfs2/mkfs/main_mkfs.c:209: trailing whitespace.
   +		strncpy(sdp->device_name, argv[optind++], PATH_MAX - 1);
