Hello,
excuse me for a newbie question, but I would like to know if ofono daemon
is responsible for connecting a modem to APN for sending MMS or browsing
internet. How it is usually done on devices using ofono? It is task for
another daemon like connman or something similar? If yes how these daemons
communicate with ofono when they are grabbing the interface for making ppp
conection?
best regards
Jan

oFono is the one establishing the GPRS context. Some other daemon makes
the control decisions on what context should be established and when.
e.g. connman makes this decision in the case of Type=internet contexts
and something like mmsd makes this decision for Type=mms contexts.

I'm not quite sure I understand the question? The context establishment
is achieved using org.ofono.ConnectionContext interface, e.g. by setting
the 'Active' property. The PPP connection is done by oFono itself.

Hi Denis,
thank you for the answer.

I will check mmsd thank you for the info. Do you know if it is a mature
project? I mean if it can be used for basic mms sending?

I'd like to use ofono to be able to do voice calls and sms messaging.
Without ofono, I'm able to connect to internet over PPP using pppd daemon
with proper script using one of the modem interfaces (ttyUSBx/ttyACMx).
Such connection can be done directly using ofono (without pppd)?
best regards
Jan

It should be complete enough to allow basic mms send and receive, yes.
However, the project is not (yet) up to the same level of maturity /
quality / stability as oFono.

oFono has its own internal ppp stack, no pppd is required. If your
modem supports a high-speed interface, then that should be used instead.
And yes, you can do voice calls, sms and internet at the same time with
oFono. Assuming of course you have at least two ttys available or your
modem supports multiplexing.

Could you please give me some example how to connect a device to internet
through ofono? When I use pppd I can see a new pppd interface in ifconfig.
Can ofono do the same?
I know the test scripts in ofono/test directory, but does there exist any
more complex ofono client which one can use as a reference?
best regards
Jan

Try the ofono plugin in connman. In fact, connman can already manage
internet connections through ofono very well.

Hi Denis,
thank you for advices again.

Just one additional question here
$ ./test/process-context-settings
Configuring /telit2_0/context1
Interface is ppp0
IP address is 10.9.8.171
Gateway is 0.0.0.0
Nameserver is 10.168.38.53
Nameserver is 10.168.38.53
route: SIOCADDRT: File exists
Where these settings (addresses) come from (dhcp?), and why there is no
correct gateway? I'm also wondering if these commands are connecting
through GPRS or through 3G if I have 3G modem.
best regards
Jan

There is no DHCP in GSM. The settings are obtained via underlying
network to mobile signaling. How they are provided to the telephony
stack varies. In the case of PPP it is done via IPCP. Some modems fake
a DHCP server in their firmware, and some provide the settings via AT
commands.
There is no gateway because the link is point-to-point, it isn't necessary.
For your question regarding GPRS vs 3G. The commands used are the same.
The modem capability and network availability will determine the
technology used. Really the only difference will be the speed you
connect at. PPP is too slow for true 3G speeds. This is why most modem
manufacturers have switched to high-speed interfaces (e.g. faked
ethernet) or other special extensions.

-Denis
