Smart! But maybe not obvious at first sight, so I'd add a brief
explanatory comment such as:
# strip bugfix number, e.g.: 1.20.3 -> 1.20

Up to here you're automating the config filename handling, not doing
anything related to update-config. It may be worth splitting the patch,
although the changed lines are very few.
