From a release perspective:
* There is a slight risk that this may introduce bugs which may not be
detected until after the release; but I think since this is going to be
tested *all the time*, that is fairly low.
* There is a slightly higher risk that there may be bugs in this which
delay the release. However, it's a very important feature, so I think
it's worth accepting, even if it does end up slipping the release a bit.
