If you have debugfs enabled in your kernel, 'ethtool -S wlan0' might show some useful stats (on a recent kernel)... You could also cat out the 'xmit' debugfs file, perhaps at: cat /debug/ieee80211/phy0/ath9k/xmit on both AP and client and see if the xmit queues have any backlog that will not clear?
