It reduces the size of /etc/volatile.cache.
Otherwise for example if you have ROOT_DIR=/, TNAME=/var/log, TNAME 
becomes ///var/log.
Also if you have verbose mode enabled it actually prints out the extra 
unnecessary leading slashes.
