Applications may also silence the whole ring buffer or few periods and
rewind the actual stream position back (if possible).

Please, see snd_pcm_sw_params_set_silence_threshold() /
snd_pcm_sw_params_set_silence_size() .

The question what to do at the end of streaming is relevant to the
question what to do when an xrun comes to an action.

These types of silence settings should be configurable. Applications
should select what's best.
