BTW, Ben, could you send me (either here or in private) some hints on
how you usually test S3? I'll then look into how to translate that into
a test case.

Hopefully, these will be helpful.

So one aspect of getting this testing automated would be to make the "wake up timer" a proper HV parameter, rather than a patch that has to be pasted on for testing.
