You define your own versioning scheme if you build with
CONFIG_LOCALVERSION_AUTO=n and define LOCALVERSION yourself. E.g.

echo "-g$(git rev-parse --short HEAD)" >localversion-git

or set it in kconfig or on the make commandline.
