It is getting very late into the code freeze now.  Most of these look 
like good improvements in their own right, and it would be good to get 
more testing of them -- could we check these in sooner rather than 
later?  I think the ones which are reviewed / acked are fairly 
independent of the ones not acked.

The node-wise specification for pinning is one in particular which I 
would have been much happier to check in two weeks ago when it first got 
IanJ's ack...
