You can easily use a supported 3.16 kernel on Ubuntu 14.04:
sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-utopic
If you have further problems with 3.16 or 3.13 on the distro kernel
please feel free to file a bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug
