Oh, I forgot to answer this.  Any error message is printed by
qemu_opts_parse, for example:

$ x86_64-softmmu/qemu-system-x86_64 -watchdog foo=bar
qemu-system-x86_64: -watchdog foo=bar: Invalid parameter 'foo'
