Cooling in most enclosures ranges from poor to non-existent. This leads to overheating drives as a matter of course, and from that to failure. (Personally, I have two enclosures that appear to have failed, and I need to investigate to see if the drives themselves are dead. Two out of two in the space of a few months is pretty bad going.)
