Summary: no sound on speakers, low volume on the headphones
Description:
Problem diagnosis:

* Sound card is detected and automatically configured, but no sound can be
heard.
* It is possible to hear _faint_ sound (very low volume) through
headphones.
* Headphone volume is 0 and I can still hear low volume sound (maybe
master/headphone switched?)
* It seems to be possible to record voice on the microphone (I see the
amplitude when talking into the mic)

Solution attempts so far:

* used alsamixer to turn up and unmute all channels (failed: no sound on
speakers, very low volume on headphones)
* use the "quirk" option of the driver -1 through 7 (failed - no bettering
and error messages with certain settings)
* tried other sounddrivers (intel, via and others - didn't try them all)
(failed - error loading modules on those I tried)

_err:
       /* clear the cold-reset bit for the next chance */
       if (chip->device_type != DEVICE_ALI)
              iputdword(chip, ICHREG(GLOB_CNT), igetdword(chip,
ICHREG(GLOB_CNT)) & ~ICH_AC97COLD);
       return err;

Maybe this is not related to this bug. But these few rows from intel modem
driver made audio part not working for me, and I think, they are still
there.

What I would try is to remove snd-atiixp-modem module completly (pysically
from disk) and try to reboot.

I feel the problem is a bit different in this case. Since the sound comes
out in a lowlevel but not silent, I suspect now somewhere in the power
management in ac97_codec.c.
Peter, do you get _any_ sound in your case?
