Interesting, I wasn't aware that upstreaming had been attempted at all.

Possibly, but I think it requires a good deal of cleaning up.
I have a working patchset on top of Linux 5.x, but it's not in an
upstream-ready shape:

Unfortunately, I don't currently have the time/motivation to do
significant work in this area, so I probably can't help much.
