Project: ALSA - driver
Issue ID: 1162
Category: PCI - atiixp
Reproducibility: always
Severity: major
Priority: normal
Status: assigned
Distribution: SuSe Linux 9.3 Professional
Kernel Version: 2.6.11.4.20a

Summary: no sound on speakers, low volume on the headphones
Description:
Problem diagnosis:
* Sound card is detected and automatically configured, but no sound can be
heard.
* It is possible to hear _faint_ sound (very low volume) through
headphones.
* Headphone volume is 0 and I can still hear low volume sound (maybe
master/headphone switched?)
* It seems to be possible to record voice on the microphone (I see the
amplitude when talking into the mic)
Solution attempts so far:
* used alsamixer to turn up and unmute all channels (failed: no sound on
speakers, very low volume on headphones)
* use the "quirk" option of the driver -1 through 7 (failed - no bettering
and error messages with certain settings)
* tried other sounddrivers (intel, via and others - didn't try them all)
(failed - error loading modules on those I tried)

I've just updated to ALSA version 1.0.9rc4
The situation is unchanged. Sound can be heard (low volume) through
headphones when Mastersound / PCM is turned to 100%. Speakers are dead.
Microphone works perfectly (tried to record my voice and used skype).

Sorry for my incorrect statement of the "quirk" option in my report -
supposed to be "ac97_quirk" of course.
I've used the "ac97_quirk" - "workaround for uncommon hardware" with
settings -1 to 7. Yast2 gave me 3 options to change:
* ac97_clock
* ac97_quirk (possible values -1 to 7)
* spdif_aclink (possible values 0, 1)

with a different brand of notebook (also AMD 64 Turion CPU) has the same
problem. No sound on the speakers, only headphones - atiixp driver.

speakers, very low volume on headphones)
* use the "quirk" option of the driver -1 through 7 (failed - no bettering
and error messages with certain settings)
* tried other sounddrivers (intel, via and others - didn't try them all)
(failed - error loading modules on those I tried)

I've just received an email from Alsa User Mailinglist, that someone else
with a different brand of notebook (also AMD 64 Turion CPU) has the same
problem. No sound on the speakers, only headphones - atiixp driver.

This is AMC97 codec - this means audio + modem in single chip. Many users
have same problem with it (intel or ati chipset), but only in alsa >
1.0.8. I think, this has something to do with modem (and alsa don't like
AMC97 codecs). First think what modem does is reset codec and probably
mess audio part.
Try:
/sbin/modprobe -r snd-atiixp
/sbin/modprobe snd-atiixp

I tried your suggestion:
/sbin/modprobe -r snd-atiixp (didn't work because driver was in use)
/sbin/modprobe snd-atiixp
I used:
rmmod -f snd-atiixp
modprobe snd-atiixp
This did not help though.
I'll try and switch back to a stable version of alsa before 1.0.8 - if you
are right, this may help and solve the problem.

Would be posible to add (to all alsa modem drivers - intel, via, ati) check
for this codec and if detected this chip failed to load driver without
touching anything (not reseting) ? This modem will not work anyway.

The current code actually tries _not_ to touch modem registers. Namely,
atiixp.c and intel8x0.c sets AC97_SCAP_SKIP_MODEM flag, so the modem
detection/initialization should be skipped.
If it doesn't behave as expected, it must be a bug...

Maybe this is not related to this bug. But these few rows from intel modem

What I would try is to remove snd-atiixp-modem module completly (pysically

I feel the problem is a bit different in this case. Since the sound comes
out in a lowlevel but not silent, I suspect now somewhere in the power
management in ac97_codec.c.
Peter, do you get _any_ sound in your case?

I feel the problem is a bit different in this case. Since the sound comes
out in a lowlevel but not silent, I suspect now somewhere in the power
management in ac97_codec.c.
Peter, do you get _any_ sound in your case?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Gildoniel - 06-08-05 17:13
----------------------------------------------------------------------
For me is, very low volume through headphones, dead speakers and working
mic. The "headphones" volume control is not affecting the volume of the
headphones. Only PCM/Master does.

I renamed the snd-atiixp-modem.ko to snd-atiixp-modem.old (which "removes"
it from the system) and rebooted my machine.
Brought no bettering though.

tiwai, your hint with the power management rang a bell - I disabled it
completely and rebooted my system ...
The soundsystem seems to work in that mode! (It just requests I'd start
the demon for power management for better system performance)
Does that mean my system is broken or the power management feature of the
codec is having trouble?

completely and rebooted my system ...
The soundsystem seems to work in that mode! (It just requests I'd start
the demon for power management for better system performance)
Does that mean my system is broken or the power management feature of the
codec is having trouble?

Gildoniel - 06-08-05 18:39
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've recompiled the alsa-driver package 1.0.9rc4 and done:
echo 5c 0000 > /proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/ac97#0-0+regs
I could notice no changes though.

Problem is with my system: Turning ACPI off crashes the system when running
in 64bit mode (so I have to do without sound). In 32bit mode I'm able to
boot the system and have sound with ACPI disabled, but that's no real fix
for the problem, as without ACPI many important functions for notebook
mobility won't work.
If there is any chance to get this fixed I'd very much appreciate it.

Since the APCI looks like the cause of this trouble, I'm afraid that this
isn't solvable in the ALSA driver itself. Could you report this to ACPI
guys or kernel bugzilla?

Sure I'll try and let you know! Interesting thing is that Radek Wisniewski
reported the same problem with his system. Only difference is, that he
tried hours with all different settings for ACPI, APM and others with no
results at all - as he said I am lucky.

I have one idea. When I load pcspkr instead of snd-atiixp driver. Pcspeaker
works just fine on dynamics & phones. After loading ixp driver I don't
hear it anymore(only in phones) so I guess some inital settings of device
are correct.. May be I should to take dump of ixp & ac97's registers to
understand what is going on?.. My attempts to do this wasn't successful I
get core dump after loading module. Is there a way to do this?

Project: ALSA - driver
Issue ID: 1162
Category: PCI - atiixp
Reproducibility: always
Severity: major
Priority: normal
Status: assigned
Distribution: SuSe Linux 9.3 Professional
Kernel Version: 2.6.11.4.20a

Summary: no sound on speakers, low volume on the headphones
Description:
Problem diagnosis:
* Sound card is detected and automatically configured, but no sound can be
heard.
* It is possible to hear _faint_ sound (very low volume) through
headphones.
* Headphone volume is 0 and I can still hear low volume sound (maybe
master/headphone switched?)
* It seems to be possible to record voice on the microphone (I see the
amplitude when talking into the mic)
Solution attempts so far:
* used alsamixer to turn up and unmute all channels (failed: no sound on
speakers, very low volume on headphones)
* use the "quirk" option of the driver -1 through 7 (failed - no bettering
and error messages with certain settings)
* tried other sounddrivers (intel, via and others - didn't try them all)
(failed - error loading modules on those I tried)
