Subject: [wishes/any Bug 2054] Mempool of headerless objects
Date: Tue, 13 Oct 2026 16:08:27 +0000	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <bug-2054-3@https.bugs.dpdk.org/> (raw)

https://bugs.dpdk.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2054

            Bug ID: 2054
           Summary: Mempool of headerless objects
           Product: wishes
           Version: unspecified
          Hardware: All
                OS: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: Normal
         Component: any
          Assignee: dev@dpdk.org
          Reporter: mb@smartsharesystems.com
  Target Milestone: ---

A mempool may be used for holding relatively small objects used only for
software purposes, e.g. connection tracking.
The current mempool per-object header is 24 bytes in size. This is wasting a
lot of memory when used with large pools of small objects.

I propose a mempool flag to create a mempool of objects without a mempool
header.

Features relying on the mempool header will be unavailable for such a mempool,
most prominently iteration over all objects in the mempool.
