Subject: [Bug 207483] New: PowerColor AMD RX580 much higher power usage on idle than Windows 10
Date: Tue, 28 Apr 2020 18:50:19 +0000	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <bug-207483-2300@https.bugzilla.kernel.org/> (raw)

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=207483

            Bug ID: 207483
Summary: PowerColor AMD RX580 much higher power usage on idle
                    than Windows 10
           Product: Drivers
           Version: 2.5
    Kernel Version: 5.5.2-050502-generic
          Hardware: Intel
                OS: Linux
              Tree: Mainline
            Status: NEW
          Severity: low
          Priority: P1
         Component: Video(DRI - non Intel)
          Assignee: drivers_video-dri@kernel-bugs.osdl.org
          Reporter: andrea.somaini00@gmail.com
        Regression: No

I have this GPU installed on my system:
https://www.powercolor.com/product?id=1493084304

The problem is that the power usage while using Linux and just looking at the
desktop is much higher than on Windows, in particular:

~7,2 Watt Windows 10
~31,2 Watt Linux (Xorg, Wayland, tty only etc)

It is more than 4 times as much power!

Indeed, after a while doing light web browsing, the temperatures are different
in the 2 systems with the GPU fans turned off, in particular:

~37.0°C on Windows 10
Between 43.0°C and 50.0°C on Linux
