1. try gdb if you like console, or with gdb+ddd for a much more GUI 
approaching
http://www.gnu.org/software/ddd/
You can run ddd and gdb under cygwin as far I know.

2. yes, -g => for debug informations
         -g -pg => for profiling, if you want ;)
