How about picking whatever works for you in the kernel conf and in 
machine conf?

SERIAL_CONSOLES = "115200;ttyS0 115200;ttyO0"
SERIAL_CONSOLES_CHECK = "${SERIAL_CONSOLES}"

Like this on the first boot either ttyO0 or ttyS0 should be picked 
automatically.
