fixed, I had the wrong graphics card set (I have VIA integrated, so I've set 
to vesa, previously it was "sis") - why did it asked for password however is 
beyond me.

ps. if you have buggy settings (like messed $console and $graphics settings, 
it will also ask for password even if the $chipset is set to "vesa")
