In the current situation you can release code even if the powers that be do not agree. Others can choose to integrate and distribute your code, .. they have and they will.. If you were at apple and some authority decided against a feature you and your team would likely not be permitted to develop it, and if developed it would not be distributable. The situation right now is somewhat unfortunate, but it is not unsolvable. Trading away freedom is seldom a good deal.
