Can Listen; Cannot Talk

Dear All,

I have an external modem.  It has, apart from the telepone plug and
the power plug, two plugs - one for speaker and the other for a mike.
I have connected my head-phone/mike to this.

Using minicom (with the help of AT commands) I am able to dial another
phone.  The phone rings at the other end.  When they answer the phone,
I can listen to their voice.  Its very clear too.  But they are not
able to hear my voice.  Can anybody help me understand why this is so?

Am I doing any silly mistakes anywhere?  Kindly help me.  Pointers to
relevant information would also be very helpful.
