Problem is nobody donating the work to write/debug/integrate/retest.
Bit operations aren't the most widely available functionality, either.

I just tried this on an RH 6.2 system and got "bad substitution".
"bash -version" says 1.14.7(1) ... surely sources to bash1 are
widely available!
