I have very few problems with gcc 2.96 in RedHat 7.0. You just need 2
small kernel patches. 

# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.2.17-0.5smp (root@load137.var.com) (gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.0)) #1 SMP Mon Oct 16 14:35:44 PDT 2000
